#15 – Peaks and lakes: shaken, not stir

Yesterday’s 4.5-hour flight from Chos Malal to Chapelco, Neuquen (SAZY), near San Martin de los Andes, was a rollercoaster of emotions. Breathtaking vistas, infinite photo opportunities, and cherished memories came at the cost of a severely upset stomach.

Malargue Fuel Stop

With only 2 hours of autonomy, I headed north to Malargüe (SAMM) for a quick fuel stop. The arid landscape, dotted with lakes and dominated by Payun Volcano, gave way to the mesmerizing Llancanelo Lake. Teo and Francisco from Malargüe Aeroclub warmly welcomed me, sharing fuel, hangar stories, and a delightful lunch (which, in hindsight, I should have skipped).

Hidden Gems

Francisco and Teo’s insider tips led me to explore Well of Souls (Pozo de las Animas) and Laguna Encantada, north of the airport. The brief detour was well worth it. As I turned south, the emerald-like Laguna del Maule and Laguna Fea unfolded, nestled in the mountains. Strong winds and turbulence were constant companions, but the stunning views distracted me from the growing nausea.

Turbulent Conquest

By the time I reached Lago Caviahue‘s breathtaking beauty, my stomach had reached its limit. For the first time ever, I swiftly grabbed a puke bag, and, well, the little I had that day made a swift exit. Instant relief followed, but the nausea persisted even today.

Lanin Volcan’s Majesty

As I followed the Agrio River south, the majestic Lanin Volcan rose ahead. Overflying Lago Quillen, Lago Tromen, and Lago Huechulafquen, with clouds adding drama, I approached Chapelco. Reuniting with cousins, meeting their kids, and savoring a lovely dinner warmed my heart.

Rest and Recharge

Today, I’m resting and recovering, hoping to head south tomorrow to conquer the Seven Lakes Path.
