#17 – From the Edge of the World

Yesterday, after accumulating over 70 hours of flight time, I touched down in Ushuaia (SAWH), one of the world’s southernmost airports, marking the halfway point of this incredible adventure. As I reflect on the journey so far, a mix of emotions swirls within me – pride, gratitude, and a hint of wonder.

El Calafate Departure

Lifting off from El Calafate (SAWC) was pure anticipation. Bordering Lago Argentino for 15 minutes, I caught my first glimpse of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, where the majestic Perito Moreno Glacier unfolded. The pale blue ice, snow-capped peaks, and gray clouds created a mesmerizing tableau.

Entering Chilean Airspace

As I turned southeast, I entered Chilean airspace, where the landscape flattened, giving way to vast lakes near Punta Arenas. I navigated through the clouds, changing altitude multiple times, until I reached the Andes again. Following the Strait of Magellan, I flew over Lago Fagnano, sandwiched between the mountains, and marveled at the breathtaking scenery.

Ushuaia Landing

The cherry on top was yet to come – flying over the Beagle Channel and landing on a runway that seemed to defy gravity, standing over the water. This was undoubtedly one of the most spectacular landings of my life.

Reflections and Revelations

As I pause to reflect on the journey, I’m forced to confront the question: why did I embark on this adventure? The standard response – “for the adventure” – no longer suffices. This experience has pushed me to my limits, compelled me to make tough decisions, and confronted me with tradeoffs. It’s forced me to discover myself, to unravel my desires, and to understand who I am. I’ve learned more about myself than I ever thought possible. I’m deeply humbled and moved by this experience.

The Journey Continues….

For now, I’ll bask in the glory of this milestone. The next destination remains uncertain, as bureaucracy threatens to hinder my plans. But one thing is clear – the journey will continue, and I’m eager to see what the next half has in store.
