#19 – The Gentle Dance of Rivers of Ice

After two days in El Calafate, I flew to Rio Gallegos, aiming to finalize paperwork for my visit to the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas). Unfortunately, despite efforts to clear the remaining permits with UK authorities, approval was not granted. Today, I’ll resume my journey back to San Fernando.

Unveiling Perito Moreno’s Secrets

During my stay in El Calafate, I delved into the breathtaking Perito Moreno Glacier. On the first day, I wandered along the walkways, marveling at the glacier’s majestic front. With Mate in hand, I spent hours discovering the glacier’s diverse angles, shapes, and colors. The occasional sound of ice calving startled me, a reminder of the glacier’s awe-inspiring power.

A Surreal Encounter

The second day brought a more immersive experience. After a boat ride across the lake, I trekked 40 minutes to the glacier’s base. Approaching the glacier was surreal; its surface, smoothed by the wind, resembled a cluster of ice cubes. As I explored the glacier’s surface, I noticed porous ice and, beneath, the intense blue hue of centuries-old compacted ice. Equipped with crampons and a helmet, I ventured onto the glacier, following the guide through an unforgettable journey.

Witnessing a Glacier’s Slow Dance

On my way to Rio Gallegos, I took a scenic detour around El Chalten, capturing breathtaking views of Viedma Glacier and Fitz Roy Peak. From this vantage point, I witnessed the glacier’s formation and its slow, majestic flow through the mountains – a river of ice in slow motion. The tour guide shared that the ice at Perito Moreno’s front is estimated to have formed around 500 years ago, leaving me in awe of the natural wonders concentrated in this region.

A Journey of Discovery

Although my Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) visit was not meant to be, I feel deeply fulfilled by my Patagonian adventure. Soaring over this incredible region has left an indelible mark on my heart.
