#5 – Halfway Across North America in One Day

Today, Team Diana soared! We stretched over 4 states from Hayward, California (KHWD) to North Texas Regional (KGYI) in under 9 hours. What a ride!

Departure and Challenges

We took off at 6 am, escaping the Bay Area’s incoming weather system. Our IFR flight plan to Santa Rosa Route 66, Texas (KSXU), led us through dark, cold, and wet conditions. Climbing to 17,000 feet, we encountered ice, but clearing clouds revealed breathtaking views: sunrise over the Sierra Nevada‘s snowy peaks.

Natural Wonders

Next, navigating restricted areas near Las Vegas, we battled strong downdrafts. But then, the Grand Canyon unfolded before us – a kaleidoscope of colors, nooks, and crannies, contrasting sharply with the Sierra Nevada‘s majestic beauty.

Refueling and Celebrating

After 6 hours, we stopped at Santa Rosa Route 66, Texas (KSXU) for refueling and a bio-break. Our provisions kept us fueled; no lunch necessary! Two-and-a-half hours later, we landed in North Texas Regional (KGYI), celebrating with authentic Texas BBQ.

Tomorrow’s Horizon

On track with our plan, tomorrow we’ll reach Florida (KFXE) and prepare for island hopping.
