#7 – Pirates of the Caribbean

Today, we conquered the Caribbean Sea, landing at Isla Grande (TJIG), Puerto Rico, after a thrilling 7-hour flight. Words fail to capture the mix of emotions: apprehension during open-water takeoff, followed by awe-inspiring scenery – emerald islands, turquoise shores, and endless blues.

Mastering the Skies

At 11,500 feet, we optimized fuel efficiency by reducing RPM and leaning the engine. Most of the flight was under visual conditions, with scattered clouds. However, passing Turks and Caicos Islands marked a critical point: 2 hours over water without nearby land or airports.

Unforeseen Challenges

Upon arrival, we faced unexpected obstacles: the island was shrouded in clouds, and 17 planes, including commercial flights with minimal fuel, were holding to land. We were placed on hold for nearly an hour, conserving precious fuel. Thankfully, our trusty Mooney’s efficiency allowed us to land with 11 gallons (over 1 hour of reserves).

Celebration Time!

After landing, I reunited with Nadia, a dear old friend, to toast our incredible feat: California to Puerto Rico in just 3 days.

Next Leg

We’ll soak in Old San Juan‘s charm until Thursday, Jan 9th. Then, Grenada and Brazil await, with sights set on Argentina by Sunday. Wish me luck!
