#3 – I Shouldn’t Have Eaten That Cake

As I began loading my trusty plane, Diana, for the epic adventure, reality struck: space is limited! Months of gear accumulation now require precise Tetris-like arrangement. The harsh truth: cargo capacity in airplanes is dictated by weight, not volume and my 510lb (230kg) full-tank allowance dwindles rapidly.

First, I need to consider crew and passenger weight. I’m a 6′ 1″, 200lb well feed pilot and I don’t expect anything less from my crew. This leaves mere 110lb for essentials: 13lb life raft, oil, tools, luggage, and carefully selected clothes. Although I’m flying with my own plane I have to pack very light.

Yesterday’s highlight: treating my visiting mother to a Monterrey lunch flight. Perfect weather – sunny, cloudless, and dry – followed a week of Bay Area rain. She marveled at our nighttime takeoff from Tracy, where we fueled up for the long cross-country.

As 2025’s final day unfolds, gratitude fills my heart: this incredible adventure, loving family and friends and freedom to pursue my passion.

Wishing you a fantastic 2025! May your skies be sunny, your flights smooth, and your heart full of joy.
